You turn the key. The engine turns over. But the car still will not start.
Many drivers assume the battery is dead. That is a fair first thought. But if you have already fitted a new battery, or tried a jump start, and the engine still will not fire, the problem is often somewhere else.
When the engine cranks, the battery and starter are usually doing their job. The engine is spinning, but it is not getting what it needs to run. That can be fuel, spark, a sensor signal, or a security system that is stopping the start.
One common cause is a faulty fuel pump. If the pump fails, petrol cannot reach the engine. Without fuel, there is no combustion, no matter how much electrical power you have.
Other causes can include:
-
A blocked fuel filter or a bad fuel pressure regulator
-
Faulty ignition coils or worn spark plugs
-
A failing crankshaft or camshaft position sensor
-
An immobiliser or security system glitch
These faults can look the same from the driver’s seat. The engine turns, then nothing happens. That is why guessing and replacing parts can waste time and money.
Do not keep cranking the engine if it will not start. If you smell petrol, stop and get the car checked. Fuel system faults are not a roadside DIY job.
