Restoring Smooth and Reliable Engine Operation
A BMW X5 was recently brought to Auto Point Plus with concerns from the engine bay, including noticeable vibration and belt-related noise. After a thorough inspection, our technicians identified a severely worn crankshaft pulley, also known as a harmonic balancer.
The crankshaft pulley is an essential part of the engine’s accessory belt system. It transfers engine power to components such as the alternator and air-conditioning compressor. On many vehicles, it also includes a rubber damping section designed to absorb and reduce engine vibration.
Over time, heat, age, and normal engine movement can cause the rubber damping material to deteriorate. Once this occurs, the pulley may begin to wobble, separate, or run out of alignment. This can place additional strain on the auxiliary belt and nearby components.
Common Signs of a Failing Crankshaft Pulley & Repairs
A damaged or worn crankshaft pulley may cause a range of noticeable symptoms, including:
Excessive engine or cabin vibration, particularly while idling
Squealing, rattling, or unusual noise from the front of the engine
A drive belt that appears worn, misaligned, or unstable
Charging problems or a battery warning light
Reduced or intermittent air-conditioning performance
In some vehicles, heavier steering where power steering is belt-driven
These symptoms should not be ignored. A failing pulley can affect the accessory belt system and may lead to further mechanical issues if left unresolved.
Why Prompt Repairs Matter
When a crankshaft pulley becomes severely worn, it may no longer keep the drive belt correctly aligned. In more serious cases, the belt can slip or come off completely.
Because the drive belt operates key accessories, this may prevent the alternator from charging the battery and stop the air-conditioning system from operating. Depending on the vehicle, it can also affect other belt-driven components. Addressing the problem early can help avoid an unexpected breakdown and reduce the risk of additional repair costs.
The Repair
Our technicians replaced the faulty crankshaft pulley and inspected the surrounding belt-drive components for signs of wear or damage. This included checking the auxiliary belt and related pulleys to ensure the system could operate smoothly and reliably.
With the replacement completed, the BMW X5 was ready to return to the road with its engine accessory system functioning as intended.
Book an Inspection
If your vehicle has developed unusual vibration, engine-bay noise, or signs of a belt-related issue, early inspection is always recommended.
